We moved into a cottage house at the top of a very steep hill. This house had no other houses near it and all you could see were trees, hills, grass, heather and sheep. It was great.

There was a big forest to the back of the house and also a big field at the front which then led into a wood.

My View Down Merlindale

The house was very old and had two bedrooms, a small kitchen, a big sitting room where I slept, and a bathroom. It had a fire which Richard put wood on and I liked to lie by it as it was very warm. The best part of this house we moved to was I could sit aside and see for miles down the valley. I also got walked every night through the forest which was great. We would walk up the track and I could run about in the undergrowth. Sometimes we would see deer eating grass. Other times, I would see a fox and once I saw a badger in the woods which are their homes. In the trees there would be little birds like blue tits and sparrows and on the ground there would be the odd pheasant. Once we had reached the top of the forest track we would walk through the dark forest of pine trees. I would often get twigs and moss caught up in my fur.

The River Tweed

Every day we would cross a big river to go to work. The river was at the bottom of our hill. Sometimes when I was bored I would run down the hill to the farm that was beside the river. I wasn’t meant to run away because it was bad for Richard and Aphedia to not know where I was, but I liked doing it and I always returned home. I liked going to speak to the two farm dogs that lived there. They were a type of sheep dog and their job was to herd sheep, but not chase them. They were lady dogs and became my friends. They couldn’t ever play for long because they had to work looking after the sheep.
